Currently Reading | Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman
It has been a while since I wrote a 'currently reading' post and in that time I have read a fair few books. One of my New Years resolutions was to read more, with an aim of reading 18 books this year (averaging one and a half a month). So far it's not going so well. It took me 2 months to read my first book of the year, it was really hard to get into it. This is book number 3 of 18 - Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman.
Callum is a Nought- an inferior white citizen in a society controlled by the black Crosses. Sephy is a Cross- and the daughter of one of the most powerful, ruthless men in the country.
In their hostile, violent world, noughts and crosses simply don’t mix. But when Sephy and Callum’s childhood friendship grows into passionate love, they’re determined to find a way to be together.
And then the bomb explodes…..
Although a young adult novel, Noughts and Crosses is a book that can be enjoyed by any age. As you may be able to tell, racism is a main feature in this book, with blacks being the superior race and whites being inferior. The chapters alternate between the two main characters; Sephy and Callum, giving you two different perspectives. It is a book that will make you think about life and the prejudice that occurs; why are plasters only produced in a white skin like colour?
I am still waiting for the bomb to explode, and when it does I am not sure what to expect. However, I am only around 150 pages in and cannot put it down. Definitely worth a read if you enjoy dystopian settings.

What are you currently reading?

I read this book a couple of years ago on holiday in Ibiza. Probably wasn't the best choice of book in hindsight, but it was sooo good! I could hardly put it down.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading a couple of books at the moment, I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh which I'm really getting into and a self-help book for the first time (Sane New World by Ruby Wax) which is.. interesting. Haha!

This takes me straight back to year 8 when I first read this series, i re-read it several times throughout secondary school and adored it. The first book is my absolute favourite. Enjoy!

OMG, I love this book and the entire series tbh. It's such a well written, twisty-turny, emotional story that really makes you think. Malorie Blackman is great author. I haven't read it in ages and this has just inspired me to add this to my to read list, which is impossibly long already haha. I love currently reading posts, I'm actually posting one later today!

I used to read the series all the times and as a 14 year old it was so eye opening. I might have to have a re read soon xx

I remember reading this when I was around 14-ish, and it was probably one of the first things that opened my eyes to prejudice. I didn't really understand the concept fully back then, but looking back it was definitely a very thought provoking read!
